Cabinet Door Wood Types

When having cabinets made, picking out the appropriate type of wood is essential in the design process. Each type of wood can take on a different style or feel depending on stains, finishes, colorants, and whitewashing. There are several factors to take into account when you have a desired atmosphere for your kitchen, dining room or bathroom.

One of these factors is the grain of the wood itself. Woods can either be open or closed grain which is very important on the appearance of a stain. An open-grained wood will make the wood appear grainier with bolder lines depending on the wood type. If you are planning on whitewashing your cabinet doors, some woods will make a door seem pink. Closed Grain, Maple Wood Red Oak Wood, Open Grain Open Grain, Ash Wood
This is an example of a closed grain Maple. Maple is the lightest type of wood we carry and is great for staining. Stains can be either a natural light color or very dark. Maple is perfect for grey, blue or whitewashing. This wood is a red oak which is an open grain and will show the contours and "lines" in the wood more with each level of darkness in the stain. It has a strong, bold grain, and will appear pink or have a pink tint when whitewashed. The above is a perfect example of an open grain, Ash wood. Notice the bold, wild natural grain designs. Ash takes stains extremely well and is a great candidate for white washing.
Pecan Hickory, Very Knotty, Closed Grain Pecan Hickory, Closed Grain, Clear Finish
The above woods are considered a pecan hickory and have a closed grain. Sometimes the wood can be very knotty like the one to the left. It generally has a clear stain to bring out the natural beauty of the vibrant grain of the wood. It typically is not chosen for whitewashing, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.
